In the end, there was a large majority in the US Senate for support for, among others, Ukraine, which was voted through with the numbers 79-18.
Among Republicans, where there has been vocal opposition, 31 voted in favor and 15 against.
The bill is next to be signed by President Joe Biden, who said in a statement from the White House that he would do so as soon as possible the next day.
The president means i the statement that the Senate answered “a call from history at an important turning point” by the decision to send weapons to Ukraine, and that it is a “message to the world”.
– We stand resolutely on the side of democracy and freedom, against tyranny and oppression.
Weapons and equipment are to begin shipping this week, as the situation due to Russia’s incessant bombing is urgent.
Among other things, Ukraine has asked for long-range weapons.
Ukraine support is included in a large package of 95 billion dollars, in which 61 billion dollars – approximately 660 billion kroner – is set aside for Ukraine and 26 billion dollars for Israel. Taiwan also receives support of 8 billion dollars.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the decision in a post on X.
