“The Simpsons” became significantly sadder than usual this week when one of the series’ original characters passed away.

The popular animated comedy series “The Simpsons” took its fans to bed when in this week’s episode “Cremains of the Day” they killed off one of the series’ oldest characters, Larry Dalrymple. Larry has appeared since the beginning of the series and usually sits in the background whenever Homer and his friends hang out at Moe’s bar.

In “Cremains of the Day”, Larry dies unexpectedly in his seat at the bar, and the episode then follows Homer, Carl, Lenny and Moe organizing his funeral. Larry was not a central figure, but he has been a steady background figure ever since “The Simpsons” first started, and many fans were surprised by the death.

“Simpsons” producer Tim Long has spoken to TMZ and apologized to those grieving Larry. At the same time, he says that he is happy that viewers reacted so strongly, as it means that they still care about “The Simpsons”. According to TMZ, Long also states that the death must have taken a toll on “Simpsons” fans precisely because people rarely die in “The Simpsons”.

“The Simpsons” is currently in its 35th season. Season 36 is already confirmed and in production.
