Many raised their eyebrows when pictures of Queen Silvia from this week’s Finnish state visit began to abound.
Queen Silvia’s red eye raised concerns
In the middle of the busy state visit, where our Swedish royals received a special visit from Finland’s presidential couple Alexander Stubb and Suzanne Innes-Stubb, Silvia was seen with an evil red eye.
But it looks worse than it is, the court explained.
– The Queen has been exposed to frostbite in the eye. Otherwise, the queen is doing well, explained the court information manager Margareta Thorgren for Svensk Damtidning.
Cold drafts occur especially during colder months, when the temperature differs drastically indoors and outdoors.

The doctor does not believe the court’s explanation about Silvia’s eye
Thorgren later announced to Expressen that the queen thanked for all the consideration and that the eye is on the road to recovery.
But not everyone buys the court’s explanation for Queen Silvia’s red eye.
In an interview with Expressen, the former expert in the SVT program “Fråga doktorn”, doctor Karin Granberg, explains that cold drafts are only one of several explanations for the red eye.
And according to her, that particular explanation is unlikely.
– Not in my world anyway.
“Underlying Trauma”
On the other hand, Granberg does not want to diagnose the queen, but believes that other types of bleeding cannot be ruled out.
– It could be a hockey player who got a puck in the eye, then a vessel bursts and you get bleeding that spreads into the eye. But now I’m not talking about Queen Silvia. I have not seen her eye.
As a physician, there are several things to focus on when a patient comes in with “a unilateral red eye.” Among other things, if it is about an underlying trauma.
– Has there been violence against the eye that has caused a blood vessel to break? Then you have to check the blood pressure, a vessel can burst if the blood pressure is very high, for example, says Karin Granberg.

The doctor looks at the color of the eye
The next step is to review what type of bleeding it is – based on color and fullness, among other things.
In case of high pressure or inflammation, the eye is evenly red, pink and more bloodshot. If instead it is bright red, it could be a broken blood vessel or hyposphagma, as the blood sinks and settles “like a red sea in the eye”.
“Looks very serious”
The latter is nothing dangerous, says Karin Granberg, even though it can look dramatic.
– It looks very serious, but when you have ruled out other things, they get to live a normal life. And if I have understood it correctly, the queen does, and continues to represent, concludes the doctor in the interview with Expressen.
