Recently, the music group’s 50 years in the limelight were marked with a big celebration evening at Cirkus in Stockholm, which was given a royal shine.

It causes unsolicited glances to be cast backwards, towards the success story ABBA. But also against the infected love breakups – which became part of the group’s downfall.

ABBA, who have certainly never ceased to be relevant, have renewed vigor with the Voyage performance in London, which continues to be a success story.

Yes, after the 40-year hiatus, this is exactly what all ABBA fans have been waiting for! And in connection with the comeback, the four members have also started to be seen more and more outwardly.

Something that doesn’t come up, however, is the love breakups in ABBA. First, Björn and Agnetha divorced in 1980, the following year saw Benny and Anni-Frid’s divorce.

In 1982, the group’s members began to pursue other projects, although they never officially disbanded. With hindsight, we know it was a reunion, even if it’s Abbaters performing in their place when it’s live.

There, in the midst of ABBA’s burning divorces, the group members were tight-lipped about the breakups. But in retrospect we have learned more.

In the documentary Super trouper – 30 years of Abba, for example, Agnetha said this about the separation from Björn:

– We always told the media that it was a happy divorce. But that was just to keep the mask out.

– There are no happy divorces. They are painful, especially when children are involved.

New light has also been shed on Benny and Anni-Frid’s divorce. Remko van Drongelen, author of the book Frida Beyond Abba, has said this in the documentary Abba: Life, career and reunion:

– It was tense between the four. They were two divorced couples now, and the drive to do something was fading.

He also added that both Björn and Benny found love again and became fathers in 1982, which was not the case for Agnetha or Anni-Frid. The ABBA writer describes it all as a “difficult time”.

But a lot of water has flown under the bridges since then. ABBA has made its long-awaited comeback and when Björn was interviewed by Apple Music 1 in connection with the comeback, he said that all the members still have a strong bond to this day.

Benny has been married to Mona Nörklit since 1981 and Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been living since 2007 with Henry Smith, Count of Hambleden. They alternate between living in Switzerland and at Mallroca.
