Actors Courteney Cox and David Arquette were married from 1999 to 2013. The couple’s daughter Coco was born in 2004.

Cox recently opened up about parenting on fellow actress Minnie Driver’s podcast.

– I really wish I could have realized then and there how I could protect Coco from certain things, whether it was co-dependency or seeing her in relationships with people who I knew ‘this is not good’, says Cox.

“I wish I had been a more decisive parent”

She says it was often because she had her own issues to deal with – but also because she knew how Coco would react.

– Even when I knew something was wrong, I didn’t want to get involved because she got so mad at me, says Cox.

She says that she used to hear her daughter say “you don’t understand, mother” to her.

– But I certainly understood. I should have trusted my judgment and put in more, says Cox.

It led to a realization about what she regrets most from her daughter’s upbringing.

– When she was a child, and even not so many years ago, I wish I had been a more determined parent, says Cox.
