An investigation shows that the coffin was most likely built in the middle of the 13th century. It has been used in Visby Cathedral as a storage place for money from trade within the Hanseatic League. Over the years, however, it has been rebuilt into a collection chest.
Among researchers, historians and those interested in Hans, the coffin is a big news.
– They are all very fond of this and think it is absolutely fantastic, says Inger Harlevi project manager Visby cathedral congregation.
The furniture has been in the attic of the cathedral, and it was only recently that it was noticed and found out how old it was. It is in surprisingly good condition, which is due to the fact that it has been in favorable conditions.
