6 suggestions: Make Solberga Forest a nature reserve!

Älvsjö Opinions

CITIZEN PROPOSAL. I propose that Solberga Forest should become a nature reserve. A management plan is also needed as the forest has become increasingly worn out by the increased number of people visiting the forest after the extreme densification that has occurred in the district. Not least in close proximity to the forest.

One suggestion is that all schools and preschools in the local area should be tasked with teaching the children about the right of access, so that they can in turn inform their parents. Littering in Solberga Forest has increased a lot in recent years, which shows that information is needed about how to behave in the forest.

CITIZEN PROPOSAL. I hereby request the following objectives in order to have a nature reserve in the Solbergaskogen:
1. Public recreation, leisure and outdoor activities are promoted and secured.

2. The area is managed according to its nature and cultural values.
3 The biological quantity is preserved and developed.
4 Land use gets an appropriate design

5 Information about the reserve’s values is provided to the public.
Regarding point 2, the following is added:
There are many species within the animal and plant kingdom that should be preserved and secured. I refer to a writing 2011‐09‐02 Solbergaskogen in Älvsjö by Britt Forsén. It is an ancient primeval forest and there are cultural heritage sites with ancient graves from the Bronze Age. Also biotope diversity.

CITIZEN PROPOSAL. I am writing to you as a resident of Solberga since 17 years ago. The area has changed since I moved here in 2007. What I appreciate a lot about this 1950s area is that when Solberga was built at that time and at the same time the majority of the current stock thought about ensuring “breathing holes” in the form of green space (trees, flower beds, tables and benches, small playgrounds between the houses.I understand that more housing is needed, but lately I have seen that the city has more and more given up what used to be such breathing holes to build more houses right next to the existing stock.

The unique and finest thing about Solberga is the Solberga forest. A forest that I have the privilege of living right next to.

The forest is a source of recreation, play, orienteering, school trips, dog walking, berry picking, exercise, etc. Also, the trees and rocks are so beautiful and there is a rich bird and wildlife that my family and I enjoy very much. It is an old forest with unique historical values that you can read about on the nice information signs you put up.

However, it would be good if you could draw up a management plan for the forest, as there will be some wear and tear with the many visitors there.

Unfortunately, near the garbage station at Diamantbacken, there are people tearing through the garbage and there is a lot of trash scattered on the street and nearby hill up in the forest.

Let the Solberg Forest become a nature reserve and protect it from further exploitation in the form of more expansion of residential buildings. Forest land, trees and rocks have already been cut down and blown away in the area in favor of several new houses. Let the Solberga Forest be preserved and protected from further impact in the future.

MEDBURG PROPOSAL. I think it is important that we protect the Solberga forest by making it a nature reserve.

Here are some facts about the forest! The trees are 150 – 300 years old. There has never been any deforestation. It has been over 100 years since cattle grazed in the forest, therefore it is a primeval forest. Making the forest a nature reserve means very little cost, as the city already owns the forest. According to the nature conservation association, there are very great values in the forest. It is rich in mammals and frog-reptiles. At least 22 different bird species can be found in the forest, i.a. the species-protected lesser woodpecker, but also, for example, the goldfinch, wagtail, nightingale, kingbird as well as the sparrow crow and greenfinch to name a few species.

The paths need protection with wood chips or similar, so that it is clear where to go and not to go. The frogs need to be protected when mating!

It is important to keep green space as a lot of construction has been done in Solberga and Älvsjö in recent years.

Within the Stockholm Region, they work actively to reach the climate goals by 2035.

An important part of that is to keep forests and green areas as it affects our climate and environment in the following way.

  • Trees and shrubs regulate temperature during heat waves. (temperature rises) * Trees clean city air from exhaust gases and other pollutants.
  • Trees prevent erosion and allow water to run away
  • Green areas act as a buffer for water for any prolonged drought.

CITIZEN PROPOSAL. I want to submit a citizens’ proposal to Hägersten/Älvsjö City Council.

Namely that the Solberga Forest is made a nature reserve. The forest is important to us residents here.

A management plan is also needed because the forest is starting to become “worn”, the more residents we get, the more people will use the forest and that will have consequences.

Every tree or plant that exists needs to be protected in view of the climate changes that are now taking place.

It takes a long time for a tree to grow up and make maximum use. Suggest that you read the book: The Secret Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.

CITIZEN PROPOSAL. We have lived in Solberga for more than 30 years. Right behind our house is the beautiful Solberga forest. All these years we have admired its diversity, tranquility and beauty. Many bird species live here, such as larkspur, pine tit, woodpecker, lapwing, nuthatch, chaffinch, leaf warbler and so on. Many times I have seen peregrine falcons, once there was an eagle perched on a pine branch behind our house.

In the Solberga Forest there are also ancient remains and burial grounds with stone placements from the Bronze Age. The forest is rich in plant species, lichens, mosses, fungi, insects, frogs and mammals. Among the many different trees there are those that are around 150 years old. In connection with new buildings in the immediate area, the population has increased considerably, certainly manifold. Many people visit the forest daily. Unfortunately, there are people who ride bicycles or even ride mopeds in the forest. Huts that children build are left behind, bushes and trees are torn down and so on.

We, old Solberg residents, appeal to you to take measures to appropriately protect our forest that many people love (for example, to decide on a nature reserve in the Solberg forest). We think Solberga Forest is like a little pearl among the heavily trafficked and overbuilt areas. Then help us preserve “the little pearl”!

Mirje and Meelis Seffers, living at Sulvägen 40

The Mergorgar proposals have been submitted to the upcoming meeting with the Hägersten-Älvsjö district council

Answer from Hägersten-Älvsjö district administration

Thank you for your citizen proposal about Solberga Forest. We will not send it to the district council for a decision, but you will receive an answer directly from us and the council will receive the answer for information.

We are well aware of the natural values of Solberga Forest and all its species and are positive about some form of protection for the forest. However, the issue of protection is not our responsibility to decide on, but it is the city planning office that investigates and the city planning board that makes decisions about protection.

Among the things that are already being done to strengthen the natural values in the Solberga forest, we can mention that, among other things, we are investigating suitable places to strengthen the habitat for lesser woodpeckers and kingbirds in the Solberga forest. For kingbirds, it is about strengthening spruce-dominated areas by removing some leaves and thus benefiting the spruce.

For smaller woodpeckers, it is instead about strengthening leaf-dominated areas by picking some spruce and creating more dead wood. In addition, we periodically look over the oak areas in the southeast to prevent them from growing again.

We see children playing and building huts in the forest as positive. Through play, the children gain a relationship with the forest and nature, and will hopefully appreciate its values when they grow up
