Then it came, that pension hump that has been talked about for so long. In the years between 2012 and 2022, there were large retirements among healthcare personnel, according to several municipalities that SVT Norrbotten spoke with.

At the same time, it was difficult to recruit in several professions with identification. Between 2012 and 2022, expenses for hired personnel at Norrbotten’s municipalities almost quintupled, from a total of just over 18 million to over 88 million.

“Too few nurses are trained”

The lack of nurses is perhaps the biggest reason why rental costs have increased in several of the municipalities.

– Too few nurses are being trained and we are also not within commuting distance of any of the training locations, says Jenny Liljebäck, head of social affairs in Överkalix municipality, which has the highest cost per inhabitant.

Överkalix has also had to hire both an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist.

Hear the manager of Överkalix about what measures are needed, in the clip above.
