After a fire broke out on board, the Vulture sank just outside Stora Ekön in the Ronneby archipelago in 1459.

Over the years, the wreck has been examined several times. A year ago, marine archaeologists from Stockholm University and Södertörn University conducted the latest dives.

– We spent four days at the wreck site and documented different parts of the wreck site with 3D, says Rolf Warming, doctoral student at Stockholm University.

“Important to understand the sinking”

For example, they were able to map a weapons chest which, among other things, contained lead plates and casting molds, something that was relatively new for that time.

– It is also important for understanding the sinking. According to a historical source, it was precisely because they did not have experience in handling large quantities of gunpowder that the fire and explosion happened on board, says Rolf Warming.

Why is it important to examine the wreck?

– It can help us understand innovation processes that are highly relevant today when you look at how quickly warfare is changing with drones and other new technologies.
