Pause the charging of the electric car – and earn a thousand.

Several players in the electricity market have joined forces to get electric car owners to contribute to a more stable electricity grid.

For some years now, Svenska kraftnät has paid out several billion kroner to companies that can contribute with solutions to quickly add or subtract electricity from the Swedish system. It is needed because the green transition makes the electricity system more dependent on the weather. When there is little wind or sun, households’ electricity use needs to become more flexible, according to Svenska kraftnät.

One area where a lot of electricity can be saved is through how the electric car is charged. Many electricity companies, such as Greenely, Eon and Fortum, offer smart charging for the electric car, which means that the charging is planned based on when the electricity is cheapest, which can result in a lower electricity cost. The electricity company Tibber also offers smart charging, but is now expanding its service further. Electric car owners can now get money back by charging the electric car on specific occasions, with their existing charging box.

– Charging can be stopped for short periods of time to balance the system and you as a customer get paid for that, says Daniel Lindén, one of the founders of Tibber.

Charging is thus paused when the power grid is stressed. Even when there is a surplus of electricity, customers can make money by recharging at that time. The majority of actors in the electricity market such as Swedish Power Grid, electricity producers and local electricity grid owners contribute to the pot of money that is paid out. According to Daniel Lindén, they are also winners in the whole thing when it contributes to a more stable electricity grid.

According to Tibber, ordinary electric car owners can get around SEK 1,000 in deductions from their electricity bill per year, but it can be more.

– If you have the car plugged in often or several cars, you can get paid more. At best, the electricity bill can be negative if you haven’t used that much electricity that month.

TT: There is no risk of the car being without power when you need it?

– It is during short periods, around 5 to 15 minutes, that the car may need to pause or start and charge. It can happen once a day or once a week – but as I said, you will get paid for that.
