2023 was a dark year with a record number of fatal accidents at Swedish workplaces. Year after year, the negative trend repeats itself, despite the fact that many of the accidents reviewed could have been prevented. On April 28, on Workers’ Memorial Day, we stop and honor those who never came home from work by laying a wreath at the scene of the tragic elevator accident in Ursvik.

The construction lift was missing screw connections when it fell 20 meters straight into the ground and five people lost their lives. It is just one of the fatal accidents that shook Sweden. Every year, approximately 3,000 people die as a result of work-related injuries and illnesses in Sweden. In the construction industry, 17 people lost their lives in workplace accidents in 2023, the highest figure since 2011. People who never return home to their loved ones after the end of the working day.

– The development is going in the wrong direction. The working environment is de-prioritized and companies chase profits instead of creating safe and secure workplaces for their employees. Man must go first, says Tomas Kullberg, chairman of Byggnads Stockholm-Gotland.

On Workers’ Memorial day, April 28 at At 10 a.m., Byggnads Stockholm-Gotland organizes a wreath-laying ceremony outside the workplace for the tragic elevator accident in December.
