Now it’s called Meta Horizon OS

The operating system used in Meta’s VR headset wants to become the Android of the VR world.

Meta hopes to create the VR world’s equivalent of Android by opening up the operating system for its Meta Quest headset to third-party developers. In this way, the operating system, which is being renamed Meta Horizon OS, should be able to become the new common standard for VR headsets and thus make it easier for developers to be able to launch games and applications for several different devices based on the same foundation. For example, Asus has said that it will develop a headset aimed at gaming, and Lenovo a headset aimed at education and entertainment, both of which will use the Meta Horizon OS.

According to Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a limited edition Xbox-inspired Quest 3 headset will also be produced that will come with an Xbox controller and a subscription to Game Pass.
