We’ve known for a while that Microsoft planned to push advertising into the Windows 11 start menu, and now the operating system has received the update that officially starts the new era of advertising embedded in the operating system’s menus.

Late on Tuesday, Microsoft began sending out update KB5036980 to users of the Windows 11 operating system. The update can be seen as the start of the operating system’s life as adware as it now adds advertisements for various software solutions and services inside the operating system.

The advertising in the start menu comes in the form of “recommendations” that suggest different games, apps or services that can be purchased via the Microsoft Store. For example, Copilot Pro subscriptions or other applications from “a small group of select developers”.

The update that includes the advertising is currently optional to install. However, the feature will be sent out broadly from the coming weeks. Windows 11 users, on the other hand, can disable these “recommendations”. This is done by going to Settings and then Personalization where there should be an on-off button for Microsoft recommendations.
