Relations between Germany and Russia have become icy because of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will call the Russian president “in due course”, he says.

– It’s been a while since my last phone call. But I plan to talk to Putin in due course, says Scholz to the newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

The last time the two leaders spoke on the phone was in December. During the hour-long conversation, the Chancellor called on Putin to withdraw the Russian soldiers from Ukraine. The Russian president, for his part, accused the Western countries of pursuing a “destructive” policy.

Since then, tensions between the governments in Berlin and Moscow have escalated, in particular over the decision to send German Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
