A Swedish man in his 50s died on Thursday in an avalanche accident in the Italian Alps, the Foreign Ministry confirms.

According to the Italian Rai, the man must have been on an excursion with four other people in Valle Maira in northwestern Italy when the avalanche occurred. The other people must also have been Swedes.

The area the group was in is popular with mountain climbers, according to news agency Ansa.

The rescue operation must have been made difficult by strong winds. After the accident, the man was taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter, but his life could not be saved.

Relatives have been notified, according to the Foreign Ministry.
